CELEBRATE THE CULTURE OF GERMAN VILLAGE AT SCHMIDT’S

From German Village, head west on I-70 (the entrance ramp is at Fourth Street) and take the first exit north, which is OH 315 (the Olentangy Freeway). About 17.5 miles later, turn west onto Home Road in the town of Delaware. The next stop is on your left, 0.5 mile from the turn.

The Olentangy Indian Caverns go back quite a few years. Millions, in fact. It took that many years for water to cut through the solid limestone to create the caves visitors tour today. For last couple hundred years, at least, humans have put the caverns to good use. Native Americans made arrowheads in the caves and maybe even buried their dead here. Cattle rustlers hid here from the law. And since the early part of the last century, tourists have been tramping through this geological underworld. Of course, roadside attractions aren’t what they used to be—or maybe it’s better to say they’re not getting the traffic they used to get—and many speculate whether the Olentangy Indian Caverns will be open to the public a decade from now. But while it’s still open, the site makes for a nice, if not short, diversion.
